Department for Communities and Local Government Guidance on Business Rates Relief for Retail Properties with Rateable Value Up to £50,000

The government announced in the Autumn Statement 2013 that a business rates discount of up to £1,000 will be given in 2014-15 and 2015-16 to retail premises with a rateable value of up to £50,000.

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has published guidance for local authorities in England on how the relief will be applied.

It lists the types of properties that will benefit from the relief which includes properties that are wholly or mainly used as:

  • Shops
  • Opticians
  • Post Offices
  • Car/Caravan Showrooms
  • Markets
  • Petrol Stations
  • Garden Centres
  • Travel Agents
  • Restaurants

Excluded properties include:

  • Banks
  • Estate Agencies
  • Medical Services
  • Professional Services
